SILVER STAR DAY A GREAT SUCCESS IN FLORIDA
What a great day and it was emotional with each banner handed out. We had a good turn out at the Baldomero Lopez VA Home in Land O' Lakes, FL
There were a total of 28 recipients, sad to say that 4 had passed away before this date. The home will see to it that there families receive the banners and certificates. You could see the smiles on faces as they received their banners and certificates.
We had a table set up with our information and brochures were taken and lots of questions asked and the enjoyed seeing the photos of past presentations.
We had motor cycle groups represented (not as many as promised to be there), but we did have some. The guys were a great help in taking banners to the recipients and helping with the flag raising. That was indeed emotional. I was so proud to see that hanging before the American Flag. We did not have any wind, it was a hot 90 out and not breeze (our summer has started, yuck). But the flag looked so good hanging there and what an honor. Everyone said how nice the flag was and they were surprised it was a big as it was.
Yes, I really did go for a motor cycle ride. I knew some would not think I really did because they were still pictures at that point. The man taping for me, was the one who gave me the ride, so did not get it taped. But honest I did ride around the block twice. It was fun, but this gal is not no motor cycle Momma. They told me I would fit in and I said no way, I do not have tattoos.
I presented and read the copy of the proclamation and certificate of SSFOA to the President of the Resident council. They will display them and the flag in the hall.
We had Col. Andrew Verrett as guest speaker. He just returned from Iraq five weeks ago. He was a very good speaker and emotional himself. He shared crock pot recipes with us at the end as we were talking. He said that his wife was glad he was home now, because he dose all the cooking. It was cute. He is very supportative of SSFOA and our mission.
I had written a speech, and got all of the first sentence read and then I mentioned my personal hero, Gene and I got emotional and could not see for tears, so I just blabbered. But hay, they Col. was emotional also, so I figured I was OK with that. We will see what I actually said once I get the tape transferred to DVD. It was taped and lots of pictures. I only have sent a few of what was taken. Our cake was really nice and everyone said how great it looked.
We also had Amber Smith from Honorable Kevin Amblers Office (House of Representatives)speak and she was great. She and I talked at le ngth afterwards and she is going to try and push and help me with the VA Claim for my DIC and for Kevin. She told me she for sure wanted to hear from me and she would mention this to Mr. Ambler and action would be taken. So I am praying this will be the answer to my fight with VA.
I also invited a three year email friend to come. She was from New Jersy and moved here to FL and her husband was a VN Veteran and died of a cancer that is also not on the approved list for VA and is fighting the system. So Amer is also going to try and help her. It was so good to meet her in person after three years of emails and phone calls. I also presented her with a banner in honor of her husband and his wounds.
We had a very good day and nice turn out. There were reporters there, and I got the cards and she said she would let me know when the story comes out. So if/when I see that I will forward it on to National.
