Bo Derek is National Honorary Chairperson for Veterans Affairs' National Rehabilitation Special Events. Derek attended the 17th annual Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic held in Snowmass Village, Colorado. In 2003, Derek was presented with the VA's highest honor by Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Anthony Principi. Derek also goes on United Service Organizations (USO) tours. The Special Forces Association named her an honorary Green Beret. Derek's father, Paul Collins, was a radio operator during the Korean War, and both her stepfather and her late husband, John Derek, were also veterans.

In March 1966, Ann-Margret and entertainers Chuck Day and Mickey Jones teamed up for a USO tour to entertain U.S. servicemen in remote parts of Vietnam and other parts of Southeast Asia. She still has great affection for the veterans and refers to them as "my gentlemen." Ann-Margret, Day and Jones reunited in November 2005 for an encore of this tour for veterans and troops at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.[11]

During a lull in her film career in the late 1960s, she performed live in Las Vegas, with her husband Roger Smith (whom she had married in 1967) taking over as her manager after that engagement. Elvis and his entourage came to see her during the show's five-week run and to celebrate backstage. She followed that up with a television special on December 1, 1968, with guest-stars Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Danny Thomas, and Carol Burnett. Then she went back to Saigon as part of Hope's Christmas show. A second television special followed with Dean Martin and Lucille Ball. In 1970, she returned to films with R.P.M. and C.C. and Company.

Oprah Winfrey dedicated her show on Thursday to military families and urged Americans to “stop the epidemic of disassociation” with those who serve.

The goal of the show was to establish a new connection between civilians and military families and Oprah urged all those watching to find a way to stop “paying lip service” to the service of so many.

Winfrey directed her audience to go to www.serve.gov to find organizations they can partner with to show their appreciation.
Chris Noel was a disk jockey for Armed Forces Radio (Good Morning Vietnam) in Saigon and her show was very popular with the soldiers, it was called, "A Date With Chris". Before she volunteered to go to Vietnam , as a civilian, she was a movie star and up and coming entertainer. Chris, voluntarily, did four tours of Vietnam . She also saw a lot of nasty stuff on her tour of forward bases. To this day she suffers from PTSD and many veterans consider her a fellow "combat" veteran and hero. PTSD stands for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. When you are exposed to life threatening situations, loss of friends in battle or the ugliness of war it can impact sensitive people. Most often they suffer from nightmares, flashbacks, and other disorders.

Twice Chris Noel's helicopter was shot down in Vietnam while traveling to line units to perform singing and entertaining for the troops.

Chris Noel was considered so popular and influential for troop morale, in fact, that the Viet Cong placed a $10,000 bounty on her head.

Chris Noel is still giving to the Veterans. She runs Vetsville Cease Fire House, a shelter for homeless vets in Florida .

Chris still suffers from flashbacks, migraines and stress disorders following her Vietnam mission.

Mrs. Obama declined the nomination, below is her repsonse to the SSFOA about her nomination.
