PTSD--GIVE AN HOUR OF MENTAL HEALTH CARE TO WOUNDED AND ILL VETERANS
ANNOUNCING: Silver Star Families of America has joined forces with
Give an Hour to help provide treatment to Soldiers who are suffering PTSD.
Steve Newton, President and Co-Founder of the SSFOA stated that “the mental health issues facing our returning troops and the failure of our current system to provide adequate treatment has reached crisis proportions.”
“We were looking to start a program or find an organization that was actually DOING something,” Newton said. “Providing PTSD resources and information is great but not much help if the Soldier cannot actually find a professional that can help them.”
“By actually recruiting volunteers to treat these Soldiers for free Give an Hour is stepping up to help in a time when government resources are stretched thin and we are proud to join with them in this effort,” Newton says.
The SSFOA will assist Give an Hour in building a coalition to support this effort.
The non profit Give an Hour will recruit volunteers to treat our kids and the CSAH will recruit and qualify Soldiers who need help. Connections among troops, their families, and the providers are already being made through the GAH network, which can be also be reached via www.saluteheroes.org.
Give an Hour is an organization dedicated to developing and maintaining a national network of volunteers capable of responding to both acute and chronic conditions that arise within our society. Their first target is the Soldiers and their families who are being affected by the current conflicts. http://www.giveanhour.org
The Silver Star Families of America is an organization that remembers honors and assists the wounded of our Armed Forces by presenting them Silver Star Banners and Certificates. They also distribute care packages when the need arises and they act as an advocate and education resource for the wounded and their families.
JOIN US AND LEND A HAND
HAND IN HAND with THE SILVER STAR FAMILIES OF AMERICA and SOLDIERS' ANGELS
The Silver Star Families of America and Soldiers' Angels have joined forces to lend a hand to our wounded and ill Soldiers across the country. Our partnership on this project starts today. Together, Soldiers' Angels and Silver Star Families will be giving hand-held entertainment units to our wounded and ill. These games will speed up the healing process for our servicemen and women, as well as entertain them.
"Poly Trauma patients enjoy the games, and increase their hand eye coordination," said Steve Newton, President and Co-founder of the Silver Star Families of America.
An article on The Washington Post site quotes the folks at Walter Reed hospital in DC, who report that videogames make excellent therapy sessions videogames make excellent therapy sessions for soldiers wounded in the Iraq conflict. In addition to the obvious medical benefits of refining motor control via controllers, the entertainment allows soldiers to reconnect to experiences they may have had prior to their combat experiences.
Therapists see the games benefiting patients with nearly any kind of injury, including patients with traumatic brain injuries.
Says Newton, "We are honored to join with Patti Patton Bader, and her wonderful team at the Soldiers' Angels, to put smiles on the faces of our wounded and ill, and to help in any way we can."
Patti Bader, founder of Soldier Angels, when told of the need stated, "Let's get this done."
The two organizations are accepting donations, and will purchase and distribute the games.
Soldiers Angels has been supporting our nation's military men and women since 2003. Their mission is to ensure that no soldier feels unloved. They provide aid and comfort to the military and its families, which may include immediate response to hardship situations.
They start with letters, care packages, and comfort items to our deployed. They also help our military families here at home as requested. For more info go to www.soldiersangels.org
